I suppose it may be like snipping the top off a tomato to encourage it to put all it's power into developing fruit? You may end up with monster aubergines!
I don't know what's happened to my aubergine - it was there one day and gone the next - strange thing is that the pot has gone too. I suspect one of my four legged friends but it could have been a daughter who occasionally gives a little giggle when I say I've lost my aubergine and follows it up with marbles more like.
How tall was the Aubergine? I have read in one of my books that when they are about 25 to 30 cm tall you nip out the tip of the plant to encourage side shoots to grow.
So definitely dont give up on it if its around that height
Those that forget the past are condemned to repeat it!
The fruit on aubergines mostly sets on the side shoots, so depending on how big the plant is you should still get a good crop but it may tak a couple of weeks to catch up to where it should have been.
What you will find is that one or more of the side shoots should take over as the new growing tip.
