Barbecue Ash

Is it a good idea to put cold ash from the barbecue on the soil for certain plants....ie I am thinking it contains pot ash and may be good for rose's, flowers and fruit type plants like tomatoes?

As it is difficult nowadays to get soot, I use mine on my onions. Haven't done any scientific comparative testing but it certainly doesn't seem to do them any harm.

I put a pot of paper ash in the earth before I put mine in outside, they're all really healthy so far. It doesn't seem to have harmed them in other words...

I've got loads of it from my fire-pit, but I just put it in the compost. How does it help onions?
