Is it a good idea to put cold ash from the barbecue on the soil for certain plants....ie I am thinking it contains pot ash and may be good for rose's, flowers and fruit type plants like tomatoes?

As it is difficult nowadays to get soot, I use mine on my onions. Haven't done any scientific comparative testing but it certainly doesn't seem to do them any harm.Why didn't Noah just swat those 2 greenflies?
