  • Grow bag/compost bag?

I have some courgette and butternut squash plants for which I have no spare room in my plot. I have previously grown courgettes in a grow bag, and was wondering if they could be grown in a multi purpose compost bag instead?
I was going to put them in the larger Morrisons flower bucket, but Mrs Compost Corner returned from "gardeners world live" yesterday having heard from Carol whatsherface from the show that courgettes (and I presume all squashes) have a shallow but widesprerad root system, so made me think twice about the buckets.
I am also doubting the wisdom of planting the squashes I have planted out, in Growing rings to help with the watering.
    Any suggestions?

You don't have to fill the bucket with compost.

You can be a cheapskate like me, and fill the bottom third with old plastic bottle tops, wine corks, upturned flower pots etc.

I am running out of planters so a growbag would be a great option for my courgettes. I have some in large planters and one in a smaller one. the ones in the larger planters are much bigger ! how many would you get in a grow bag or even a MPC bag?

I have been using grow bags for my tomatoes and cutting them in half and standing them on their sides and the tomatoes are doing great, but they are all leaning against the wall. If I was to use a bag for the courgettes I would want to lie it down flat(no wall left!) would I get 3 in the bag or would they be too squashed sorry for the pun

Are aubergines the same? I have some small plants I started from seed and am not sure what they should be planted in.

It wasn't the amount of compost in a bucket that was my primary concern, more the supposed need for the roots to spread out rather than go deep.
Also, is MPC in bags different to the compost used in grow bags?

I like the bottle tops idea though, I currently have a lot of polystyrene packing saved from the delivery of a freezer, so break that up to use in place of broken pots to aid drainage.

I've grown all sorts in plastic bags, from potatoes to lettuce. Our local farm shop grows a lot of their own toms, cukes, etc in old fertilizer sacks with holes punched in the bottom. If it works for them....

I have done 3 to a grow bag but they were rather squashed. Would recommend you stick at 2 per grow bag.

I've got mine in builder's buckets with MPC and a bit of well rotted manure and they are going like the clappers! They don't seem to mind having their roots curtailed a bit in terms of the spread. I meant to feed them once a week with tomato food once the courgettes started forming but I tend to forget and so it's probably more like once a fortnight or every three weeks... despite this one of them has got 8 courgettes at various stages growing.

I'm fairly sure it is different, the one's I have say they have got added tomato food. If you're concerned and you've got the grow bags anyway why not have the best of both worlds and put the contents of the grow bags in the buckets?
