  • And so to Crosnes?

You see, I do read GYO...... honest!

In this months mag there is an article on Crosnes which looks an interesting and easy plant to grow.
Unfortunately it doesn't mention a supplier!

Any of the grapes grew it before or know where I can get some rhysomes?

I thought they looked like some weird stir fried insect larvae in the photo! Interesting to try growing them from a novelty point of view, and to scare any visitors we are feeding...

My daughter thinks they look like insects, but I remembered they are also known as Chinese Artichokes. Also remembered seeing them advertised somewhere. Just had a poke through various assorted mags and seed catalogues and found them in Dobies Fruit & Veg Catalogue 2007, page 4. Website www.dobies.co.uk
        Hope this helps

I;m afraid they look too much like bugs for me, not at all apetising, good on yer for giving them a go Snadger, but not my cup of tea I'm afraid!

Thanks rustylady, I would never have found them without you help, and even struggled with it! Cheers

I got mine from Marshalls a 3 years ago and they were really easy to grow...and last year...and this year!!!
Beware they really do spread like mint !
Did enjoy eating them..and they were fun maggots on halloween- although they would take some scrubbing to get rid of the soil in the folds. ( I have peat soil and it was still a bit of a job!)
Just consider containing them a little! - Small crop- but nice to have a change I always say!!

Might even try containing them a litle in a 'container' ie 15" pot filled with peat/coir based compost?

Something else to find a permanent patch for. They'll have to wait there turn along with lots of other things. Also I'm not sure I could convince Mr and Miss E to eat them!

Not even on halloween as Nicos mentions?

Nice in a spagetti sauce as worms and maggots!

Miss E is partial to worms as playthings so eating is probably a no-no.

They have a gentle nutty flavour - rather nice texture too . Just a bit fiddly.
Yes I would grow again - in several pots.

The photo put me off a bit, I thought they looked like the grubs they give them to eat on 'I'm a Celebrity get me out of here' ! They look as though they might be hard work to prepare, would they grow big enough in a container or would you end up scrubbing lots of tiny little 'maggots' to get a portion?

they are about 3-4 cmx 1cm each, and I scrub mine with a nailbrush.
You'd need several pots- a raised bed would contain them, and they are easy enough to pull out and transplant if they start to go out of bounds.
They don't grow very deep which makes it easier to crop.
The top growth on mine was about 15cm.
