  • Garlic Disaster!

Have pulled up one of my garlic today as leaves were going brown and rusty and everyone else seems to be lifting theirs!
But what went wrong??? It hasn't bulked out at all! its just a little bigger than when i planted it!
They went in in Oct/Nov so have had plenty of growing time! they are next to my over winter onions that went in at same time and are FAB! biggest ever! onions possibley got a better "fingering" but I grew garlic well last year without doing that, so what went wrong?

I pulled mine up today ... well, I tried to. (the foliage turned yellow and died back a few weeks ago)
the stems had rotted, leaving the (still ungrown) bulb in the ground.

    I just can't grow garlic.

They looked like mine were about 4 weeks before they were ready. Planted out in Sept and I took them up last week.

I'd give them another fingering, a good water and another month.

I'm nervous about mine too as first time growing it. If you don't mind me asking, what do you mean by a 'fingering'????
EDIT ah never mind found it on another thread. Haven't been doing any of that - so maybe I will, though prob too late now.

It appears to have quite a bit of growing to do yet? Not an expert on garlic, but methinks you've lifted it too early? Mine is staying put until the tops die down!

I planted mine in March this year (complete beginner chancing her luck!!) - again, not a lot has happened. Should I cut my losses and try again at the end of the year or leave 'em in for a bit longer and see what happens?

I think the reason why they went brown and rusty was due to Rust!! Too much rain probably? I`ve lifted mine and dried them now they are in plaits ready for use. Last year mine were small, this year I was quite pleased, I grew mine next to onions too that I put in at the same time, November.

I think your garlic is just 4 weeks short of being ready Hannah - lifted too soon. It puts on a lot of bulb growth in the last few weeks.

glad I only lifted one to check! have given them another good finger and will give them a few more weeks before lifting again. I know that its supposed to be a lift around the longest day thing, so with any luck they will be fine and am panicing for nothing!

Nice cloves Zazen, I'm amazed you've already cropped. Mine went in at much the same time but are still showing full green tops. Do they mature quicker if they get more rain ?

Possibly rana - we certainly get alot of it up here. I had to harvest as the rain we had last week caused them all to fall over and I didn't want them rotting.

I fingered mine about April time, but unlike onions the cloves are a bit deeper.

I am harvesting my final moon garlics this weekend, and one I can see already is huge. Once the non-moon ones are out [first week of july], I will put the differences in sizes, but every moon clove bar one so far has been significantly bigger than the non-moon ones.....by a long shot. I really want them all up now as they are SO rusty, but a trial is a trial and so they stay until the very last day.
