  • Just a thought....

Is there a thread that lets us beginners know when to sow what? If not could we maybe get one going?

I find that i only grow through the summer months, ( albeit i only started last year ) and totally forget about winter growths and by the time i remember its too late!!

By the time you'd read the thread on when to do it..........it would be too late to do it!

Snadger.... i'm thinking of just going to the date, i.e today is the 18th, so i'd go to last post to see what people have sown or are planning to sow that day......

Have a look at the 'what I did today' thread, or keep your eye what 3 or 4 of the nearest respected grapes in your neck of the woods are saying they are up to (on here or their blog jobs)

Your seed packet tells you when to sow.

I have all mine arranged by month.
As said above, also check out the What I Did Today thread in the Vegging Out forum.

I think Veggielover means a thread that has a yearly plan of successional sowings/plants to allow time to buy and sow the various veggies.

My opinion is that one man's plan is another man's gristle (or words to that effect!! ) so it is hard to give a definitive answer.

My advice is the same as that given very often on here by many grapes....

1/ List all the veg that you eat normally

2/ List any veg that you eat occasionally and would like to eat more of

3/ Put the list into the three rotation types

4/ Research (ie ask questions on here) the sowing date, planting out date and harvest date of each plant

5/ Draw 3 or 4 plans of your plot showing which you will put where in early spring, summer, autumn and over winter

6/ Use a calendar (do both a paper one and a computer one that will automatically remind you) to show when you will buy and sow each plant

If you have any gaps then I'm sure grapes will be only too willing to make suggestions but if you don't eat it why grow it??
The proof of the growing is in the eating.
              Leave Rotten Fruit.
              Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potasium - potash.
              Autant de têtes, autant d'avis!!!!!

It would be difficult to do something that was properly helpful without being really rather vague as we all live, not only in different parts of the country, but different parts of the world so conditions are very different. Also, it can depend on the type of soil you have and on how sheltered your plot is. Seeds packs usually give an indication on when you should plant but again this is general advice and tends to be very southern based so I often add a few weeks as I'm further north. Your best bet is to follow the advice above and keep good records of what works for you. I always record when I sow, pot on, plant out etc etc and find it invaluable from year to year. You'll sometimes get it wrong but you'll get better each year.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

My ploy with brassicas is to sow loads in 8" pots and just bung em in when I find a gap that hasn't just had brassicas in it. Same with onions (still loads to plant out) and leeks!
