  • Florence fennel......

Ok so i was watching Celebrity Masterchef and they made a dish containing this........ Myself and OH thought the dish looked lovely so been out today and bought seeds...... my question is this.... can i grow it in pots? as i only want to grow a few to see if we like it, if we do then next year there will be a special place in the garden for it.

If it is able to grow in pots what sort of size will i need for say 2 plants?

Apparently they will grow in individual pots providing the soil depth is at least 5 inches (I'm trying it myself this year for the first time so this is only what I've read!!).
The proof of the growing is in the eating.

They will grow in pots so long as the pots are no smaller than 5" diameter and at least 5" deep. I have about 300 outside in the posh walled garden - haven't been up since we've had the rain but will check on them tomorrow morning.

I'm trying this for the first time this year as OH loves it. Its got a liquorice, aniseed taste. I've got a few in the garden and some on the allotment - they seem to be doing okay so far.

I grew these last year, didn't realize they needed earthing up, so the bulbs didn't form that well, but they were tasty, and I'm having another (hopefully more successful) go this year.

Joe Swift was sowing these tonight. He reckoned they need 45 cms between rows so I guess they need a bit of space.

He also said sowing now as the days were shortening was better as it stopped them going to seed

My experience with florence fennel growing it for the first time this year is all positive: easy to germinate, grows like a racecar, and no pests. I havent earthed up the bulbs as they seem to be growing nicely without it, and havent gone too green. I screwed the spacing up; they are a bit crowded, so not much light hitting the bulbs .
