  • self seeding tomato chaos

I have a patch of (almost) hundreds of self seeded tomato plants. They are a mix of marmande and cerise. I have transplanted a few into my beds but there are still loads left. I want to get the best from them. I will certainly support them but should I thin them too? It seems such a waste to dig up happy healthy plants in flower. I have nowhere else to put any more. They are in amongst the squash - will they upset the squash - I have read conflicting advice about toms and squash together. If I had to choose I would choose the squash and pumpkins over rogue toms.

They will need thinning. Can you pot some up and give them to a school fair, or sell them at the gate? Give them away?

I tried jogging, but I couldn't keep the ice in my glass.

We don't have schoolfairs here (just loooong evenings of pastis), no gate (or even road) to sell at and everyone else round here has had theirs in for a month now.

It's what happens when you are a very messy gardener and pull up all the tomato plants (including a few greenies and split ones) and chuck them all in a pile and forget about them for too long. Then, of course, there are the ones that drop and you don't quite ever get round to picking up. I pulled up one tight clump of seedlings and found that they were all still in the same tomato skin together

I learned to my cost that you can't put tomato bits in the compost otherwise the little beggars just pop up all over the garden. Don't know if it still happens but years ago i was at school with a lad who's dad worked at the local sewage farm and he grew tomatoes from the seed that had passed through peoples bodies and sprouted from the dried sludge!!

I reckon that my compost breeds tomato plants; I find them everywhere. I have 30 plants already, so I put them back in the compost bin!

Yes I get them from the compost and as I grew those wretched Sub Arctic Plenty last year, don't like to pot on any of these sturdy little plants just in case its them, so back they all go in the compost bin.

I've just put all my spares in any little nooks and crannies - going to top them after 2 trusses and just hope for the best; mine weren't self seeded [I have 2 at the lottie that are but they spaced themselves out nicely]...so I'd just uproot and plant out wherever there is space.

Well I have a few flowers now, so I can tell which are the marmande anyway. I shall pinch them out and leave them as they are - hoping for the best. I think I will pull out the cerise, they all split last year anyway.
They had better work, the toms that I have sown are too small to do anything with so, apart from 4 bought Andine Cornue, they are all I have this year!
