So what makes the potato produce more greenery than spudery? Some of my bags have very few potatoes in them... like say 12 to 20, differing sizes, for 3 plants.

Hopefully after 8 years you now know. I am in my first year but thought more/bigger spuds grew the longer you left them?

We bought a small sack of unspecified variety spuds which we like but we left a few in the bottom of the sack in the quasi-cellar and they chitted. As we also had some spare plastic terracotta tubs - ~20" height and diameter I thought to try growing them.

Seem to be growing well so far. About 2ft of rich green stems and leaves. They seem to create sets of small leaflets by day which grow to full leaves at night.

^^^^^^^^^^^Just remember to keep them well watered or you won't get spuds.

Perfect timing for this thread I have pots of potatoes in the greenhouse where the haulms are about three feet high I think I will be emptying one of them tomorrow to check how they are going, I have not been giving them a lot of feeding but plenty of water

That's the beauty of growing in carrier bags rary, you just lift the bag out of the pot, have a look, take what you want & put the bag back in the pot.

Probably enough to keep the local chip shop going for a while!

What does "plenty of water" mean? Mine are in 18-20" tubs; holes in bottom so can't waterlog; with Multipurpose Compost with John Innes (and some last year's strawberry and other annuals compost).

I'm keeping them well watered but not to the point of soaking daily until the water runs out the bottom. Should I be doing that?

As to harvesting; I thought we did that after they flowered? Mine are just starting to flower.

                                Many thanks for wisdom!
