Mystery veg!

Firstly I love this site - what a lot of helpful info!!

Now, this plant grew up in the middle of my radishes. Am new to growing most veg this (only tried potatoes and runner beans before) so I don't really know what it is. Is it some sort of brocolli? If so, I'm guessing I shouldn't have let it start flowering

I Don't know what it is but, yes, some sort of brassica. If it is broccoli then it is the flower heads you eat(before they open) thus you have not done the wrong thing just cut of the long one and try the bit that's coming...not much of a meal there though! All brassicas are prone to out and cross breeding so you can end up with some strange plants...obviously a rogue seed in your packet.

Deffo looks like Oil Seed Rape to me - I have loads of it - rip it out and bin it. This is not as uncommon a problem as you may think with brassica seeds, as they are all very similar, especially when they flower, so the odd one or two rogue seeds should not be unexpected.

Can you eat the shoots of OSR when it is at the sprouty stage?

Thanks for the helpful replies. My daughter is very disappointed that it's Rapeseed, she wanted it to be something edible (as did I!). Still it can come out and make room for another cabbage!

great - now I know what to do with the bits that sprout up on my lottie and at the sides of the road - do you just pull it and leave it in their run?
