Pea Support Ideas

Hi All,

I am looking for some ideas to support some Peas I bought at the garden center - I did grow some but they don't seem to be doing very well

Any way, I need some basic, cheap ideas on how to build a Pea support and also I can do on my home as hubby will be at work when I do this ( I have booked the day off to spend some time on the allotment )

What peas are they?

Tall peas = 6ft canes.

Not so tall peas = 4ft canes.

Plant in a square and put a cane at the outside of each corner

For the tall ones, put string around the canes at 2ft intervals to keep them in.

Well, use 4ft ones and if they grow taller, put 6ft ones next to them.

Pea sticks!! Just get any twigs and pop them into the ground for them to grow up, kinda like the ones we've done for the 3 sowings of peas that we've done! You can just see 2 lots of them near the bean support canes in the piccy!

this year i planted an 8ft row of kelvedon wonder peas using bamboo canes to support some plastic mesh - a kind of mesh fence about 2ft high - peas planted both sides of the fence - the peas have grown to 4ft high so flopping all over the place and can't get to a lot of the peas - the mesh and bamboo isn't very sturdy either - i'm going to add bigger canes with string to hold the plants more upright

i'm going to plant another couple of rows, one of kelvedon wonder, one of rondo - this time i'm making 4ft high frames out of 2x1 timber with chicken wire stapled to it - can reuse these each year, pull them up and move them to keep the rotation going etc etc

remember if you plant both sides of frame / fence etc, leave enough room to get in there and pick the peas both sides!

We've made a frame with wooden dowels and chicken-wire, then 'hinged' two together at the top with cable ties so they make an upside down V and will support two rows, they will also fold up neatly so they can be put away for winter. This is our second year using them and they've been great.

Pea Support Ideas

Last year, when I was chopping back the buddlia and fig, I saved the long bits and used them as supports for this year's peas. In the spring I pruned the forsythia and am saving the long bits for next year's peas. Before that, I gleaned all the useful twigs that had fallen off trees on the way home.
