Peas and sweet peas

Hi All

I am a little confused... I am growing peas but have heard people growing sweet peas in with the peas. Now I know that sweet peas are poisonous so how on earth do you tell the difference?

sweet pea flowers are usually more colourful, larger and scented compared to pea flowers. I think I am right saying that they are also on a longer stem. When the pods form (which you don't really want your sweet peas to do as they stop flowering then) the eating pea pods are much larger and flatter. Sweet pea pods are a little bit hairy (if I remember right). It is quite easy to tell the difference

thanks for clearing that up, i always wondered why sweet peas were in a flower seed packet, while regular peas in a vegetable packet.

if you want to grow both, which I do, it is quite normal to grow sweet peas on the same canes as your runner beans.
