What can I grow in a builder's bucket?

I had a mooch around our local B&Q store yeterday, didn't see anything of interest and did't want to come out empty handed so bought a black 14 ltr builders bucket for £1.

Now I have to decide what I am going to put in it, any ideas?

I have quite a few tommy plants growing in Morrison's 10 ltr flower buckets, my courgettes are in black stacking crates...........

I have 3 rasberry canes in seperate flower buckets and a blackcurrant cane/bush in a 10 ltr flower bucket, would it be best to put one of these in the 14 ltr bucket?

I haven't grown anything before except for a couple of Gardener's Delight toms.

I have used the B & Q buckets for spuds this year. Keeps them neat and I can tip it out quite easily for a "furtle".
I think it's a bit late for planting spuds now, unless you want to hang onto it for Christmas spuds for the greenhouse, which you would plant up in July/Aug time
Other than that, what about a bit of salad stuff ie lettuce, spring onions?
Not bad for a £1 though are they? Nice and strong, should last quite a few years anyway.

Thanks for the ideas folks but I am already growing spuds, carrots and different types of lettuce (I'm not bothering with onions).,

I did buy a half dead black grape plant from Tesco which seems to have come to life, I was going to put it in the plastic greenhouse (6x4 foot one), I suppose I could put that in it.

It does say 3ft x 23ft on the tag! I thought I could try and grow it up the side and across the top of the greenhouse.

How about broad beans, there fast little growers, have gorgeous flowers, and are very good grown in containers ??

Hi - I use B@Q builders buckets on the patio to grow courgettes, also I have half-a-dozen dwarf French beans in one.

Slap a courgette in it, or plant a couple of seeds and pull the weaker one out

I'd go for a courgette or beans. Whichever you prefer. In that size of a container nothing will give to a better crop than beans.

Could you grow a builder?
Is there no way you can grow the vine you mentioned up a south facing wall?
They can get quite big, as you say, and to have it growing round your g/h could be a bit "busy".
I would probably go for a courgette in the bucket, sounds a reasonable size.

Sorry just re-read and you have courgettes already. Maybe a different sort of squash? The yellow pattypans (dont know their real name) perhaps?

its to late now but i have my tomatoes in the b&q builders buckets in the green house,
its an idea for next year,but dont forget to drill drainage holes in the bottom and then put broken pot bits in the bottom as well.

Thanks for more ideas guys, I have put the vine in there for now as I have beans, peas, courgettes, tomatoes etc in other buckets already.

I think I will go for the courgette idea next year, it is in a black Tesco value stacking crate now but I think I will use the bucket for one when I grow them again.

Our south facing wall is the side of the house and our grouting isn't the best so I am not sure about putting the vine on the side of the house.
