What is this?

Hi all,

I bought a plant at a carboot a few weeks ago and was told that it is a gooseberry plant/bush. Hopefully somebody can help me out.

Also what ever it is it fruiting? It has a few little pods on it see the pics.

Well, as far as I'm aware that isn't a gooseberry bush, but I can't offer any clue as to what it is!

It looks to me like either a tomitillo or a cape gooseberry. Tomitillos are the original tomatoes from south america and are used in salsas they are either green or purple, cape gooseberries are bright orange, both form pods and the fruits are inside.

From the flower it's almost certainly a cape gooseberry (Physalis)

So - NEARLY a gooseberry bush then! You need a really hot summer for the fruit to be sweet enough to eat but they make those gorgeous orange chinese lanterns in autumn and are brilliant for that alone.

Remember it's a perennial..and you need to keep it indoors overwinter...next year you should have a wonderful crop!!!!

I grew mine in grow bags in the greenhouse and they died off in the winter cos I stopped watering them not knowing they were perennials- and the greenhouse was unheated.

I wonder what other peeps do????

The plant has grown loads in the few weeks I have had it I def dont want to loose it, so if anyone has any advice that would be great.
