Tasty Toms ?

Hi folks
Looking for some assistance in selecting tomato varieties to grow next season at my MG- need some thoughts on cherry toms, maincrop toms, plum toms and heritage toms - no outdoor varieties please other than cherry types - they haven't a hope in hell up here.

For a heritage variety Rat try The Bloody Butcher. Gorgeous!

i think that Good old Gardeners delight take some whacking. Ferline isn't a bad one aswell bit bigger mind but is blight resistant.

Moneymaker or Alicante are nice ones & my mate grew some Roma (plum tom) they were nice

I have grown Sungold cherry tomatoes outdoor for the last two years, with success. They turn an orangey colour rather than red. They are quite sweet.

I would recommend them.

Can't advise on tomatoes Rat, but great to hear you talking about your market garden. Hope it is all going great for you. Your contributions are missed on the vine - but we know you are busy. Every success with the MG.

Would recommend Roma for the flavour and not too many seeds either.

However they were susceptible to grey mould this year grown under cover, although that may just have been my growing conditions. Also the fruit can be quite large and so take a long time to ripen which may be a problem where you are. I got quite a good crop though.

For cherries Rat, Sungold and Tropical Ruby are my two "Gold standard" varieties against which all others are judged and they havent been userped yet.

Marmande are a great beefsteak and Tigrella are a tasty maincrop.

Would have to agree with Tigrella and Marmande. Fantastic choice!
I sow mid Feb indoors and move out to my MG to plant by April.

Thanks for the reply.Where abouts in UK are you - Marmande and indeed any other outdoor tomato is very risky up here.

Grew lots of 'black' toms and some cherry types, but best of all I really loved the taste of 'Matina' - it went wild in the greenhouse, grew early, prolifically and long season.

(Medium) ORGANIC. Early maturing, this highly reliable potato leaved tomato produces excellent yields of superb tasting fruits with intense red flesh. (Indet).
Halfhardy annual. S March – April H August – September.

Oh its also an heirloom variety, I think, German or French.

Lots of ideas here. I feel another 42 plants coming on! (I told my Aunt (a very good grower of veg) that I had 42 tomato plants in the polytunnel and greenhouse this year and she said I couldn't possibly look after that many plants properly. Thats me telt! So I will HAVE to cut down next year. So don't keep coming up with such alot of ideas that I will have to try

Our growing season here is so short, I think I may concentrate on smaller toms next year. Alicante took so long to grow that by the time they got a size ready for turning red they had either split or got mould. But the green chutney is GREAT!

With all the tomato seed I have I'll be having to sell or swap some plants. A doctor colleague is planning to get an allotment and has lots of seed brought in from his home country by family so I feel some experiments coming on. I'll have to get a contact number from him for when he moves to his next job in the hospital which will be feb prime heated propagator season.

My fave cherry tom is still 'garten pearle'.Get really good crop indoors and out.(outdoors seems to take a long time to ripen,then all ripen together pretty quickly)and taste really nice(grandkids love them).

I know this is going back a while....but did anybody try the upside down method for growing toms discussed at the start of the year?
