Mulch...

Hi,

I had in my garden 3 connifers that had to go as they were taking the space I needed for the patio and mini greenhouse... ;-)

I was wondering if it is possible to use the needles to cover soil of some of my potted veg to prevent them from drying too much. is it a good idea, a bad idea ?
what do you use to mulch around your plants ?

I think conifers are good mulch for acid loving plants, but not sure about them as a general mulch.

Thanks... need to find out now which plant like acid and which don't... in my greenhouse I have tomatoes, courgettes, bell pepper, strawberries, carrots, radishes and lettuce...
I'm off to find more info about this...

I agree with compost corner, they'll give quite an acid mulch which is great for things like blueberries but for other plants I'd be inclined to mix the needles with more general compost and even add a little lime to neutralize it.

Rhodos, azaleas, conifers, blueberries ...pine needle mulch

If you can mix them in with other stuff, they will make a good general purpose mulch
