Earthing up onions

When you fingered the rest, did you end up by clearing the soil out of the way of the growing bulbs like this....?

Yes something like that. I promise I didn't do anything naughty.

I've started to crop some of the onions that were either earthed up, fingered, or left to their own devices, and I can't see any difference in any of them, so I don't think it matters if you earth them up or not.
