  • Too late to plant beans?

I don't know where the last few months have gone and I haven't yet got round to planting any runner beans or french beans. Am I too late to do this or is worth me starting some off and putting them in anyway? On the plus- side I did get my broadies and peas in which are doing well (apart from the black- fly that is).

I believe beans can still be planted. I am planning to sow another batch soon to keep the crops coming longer

I've had a bit of a failure with my climbing beans sewn in loo rolls, so yesterday I direct sewed a few seeds into the gaps, hopefully they'll have time to do something.

I did also sew some dwarf french beans at the weekend - I understand they'll crop okay this late on.

I feel, that for the price of a couple of seeds, its worth having a go, even if you're a month later than the packet says for last sewings - I could always cloche them later on in the year couldn't I.

Apparently we've to have a long and late summer this year so if that's right then surely that means we should be able to have longer crops? I know it depends on light too but I'm giving it a go....as Becki says it's only the price of a few seeds

I never sow my runners until the last few days in June, and I'm running late this year so they'll be going in at the weekend. They keep producing until the frosts so you should get a very good crop. I usually sow climbing French beans in early June, that way they're almost finished by the time the runners start and I can leave the last few for drying. This year though they didn't go in until last week, the two might now clash, but I'll just have to freeze more. The one disadvantage to late sowing is that in warm summer weather you need to keep on top of the watering in order for them to germinate consistently.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

I'm thinking of putting another sowing of french beans in this week. The first flowers have appeared in the first batch. I didn't want to be caught out again - we had 4 glorious weeks of mange tout and then they ran out of steam.

Can someone let me know roughly how long french beans will go for before they run out of steam?

I'm sowing more this week, too. Had limited success with my pot sown ones, so I'm going for ground sowing PLUS pot sowing!

Wee Garden, when I last grew French beans, they carried on for quite a while!! At least a couple of months!

I've just sown some more today ... they tend to take about 3 months to crop, so that's just right

I planted some beans earlier on this week, so I'm glad you posted this thread! Hopefully they should be fine.

i've just put a few seeds out too - some of my beans are coming through but others have been eaten....would be delighted to get some later crop!

I lost all my beans (runner and french) to adding manure that wasn't well rotted. So sowed 2 strips of dwarf french beans last week. They haven't germinated yet but hoping they give me decent crop.
Also planting some broad beans as a trial, never got to planting them earlier. There is the danger of blackflies but hey ho! if they don't I've just lost some seeds and learnt a lesson
