  • Chopping Chillies.

Just thought I'd ask about overwintering chillies. I have a few 'Twilight' plants that are quite tall (about 2-3ft) & leggy with scrawny rubbish leaves at the top where the greenfly got them. They are in the kitchen window & have dropped some lower leaves & only have a few tiny chillies on them now. Is it possible to cut them down to a leaf node about 6ins from the compost & get them to bush up & grow again for next year?

Think this was brought up recently and the concensus of opinion was dont cut back, overwinter if you want and may get a crop next year but it will be less and we are really better to plant afresh next year!

I was going to try the same but unfortunately due to bad ventilation in the greenhouse on my part the plants sort of died off and had spots on the leaves so I got rid. If you type in chillis in greenhouse over winter you should come up with the thread I started a while ago. I think we are better to start with new plants each year from what I remember. Dexterdog

Thanks Annie & DDL, I looked up the 'chillies in greenhouse' thread & there did seem to be a few different opinions on whether it would work or not so I'm going to try 3 different methods, cut one down quite hard, lightly trim one & leave one alone & see what happens. Knowing my luck though they will all just die & I'll have to start again next year anyway but I'll let you know if it works.

Three of mine seem to have spawned cities of aphids so they are going firewards as my attempts to dislodge them have come to nothing. The others look ok at the mo.

Might be worth eating the aphids as they could have that sweet, hot nutty texture!

It is perfectly possible to overwinter peppers and with some varieties, they actually fruit better in the second year. I have two aji hot lemon plants on my windowsill. I tend to cut back to about 5 inches. And prune back the root ball too. The repot in new compost. They'll get a new lease of life and be streets ahead when it comes to spring.

Thanks, I'll try repotting them as well in some fresh compost & keep my fingers crossed.

Many years ago, whilst sitting in a pub, I overheard a guy telling someone about what had happened when he had been helping his girlfriend prepare for a dinner party. He had chopped the chillies and then had gone to the loo. He hadn't had any previous knowledge of chillies. He spent half an hour after that with a vital part of his anatomy in the bathroom sink!

Sorry, this has nothing to do with your query has it?
