  • All flowers.

My runner beans are beanless at the moment,i have a mass of flowers, that once dropped leaving no bean.I have sprayed the plants with a sugar solution to attract more insects for pollunation, but i am not sure if this will work.I half suspect that my beans are planted in to much of an exposed site.I have also noticed this year there does not seem to be many bees round.

    Any ideas ?

Don't spray with sugar - you will attract greenfly, ants and blackfly. Bean flowers sometimes drop if they don't have enough moisture. Give the row a good soak in the evening

You could get some hydrated lime, mix a handful in a watering can full of water and water the ground around the beans. Don't get it on the foliage. It will sweeten the ground and the flowers which will attract more bees.

The first runner flowers are always dodgy to set. The heat is making it worse. Lots of moisture at the ground and lots of fine misty spray above.

I usually put a few sweet peas in with the beans, they help attract the bees.
