Machine gunned

I recently complained abour slug/wireworms in my spuds.
Nothing compared to this ..
My wife emailed me and said we had a hail / thunder shower late afternoon.
When I came home and looked round the garden it's machine gunned everything.
The cucumbers in the frame are peppered
The squash in green house doorway is shredded
The courgettes in raised bed are full of holes.
Even the sprouts and broccoli plants look to have the leaves ripped down at the joints.

We've certainly had some freaky weather! The good news is the should recover ok anyway!

To top it off we had strong winds , rain and cold overnight.
Not most conducive to recovery !

Where are you Jimmy? Here in South Yorkshire we've had storms and heavy rain that really hammered the crops and cold overnight, but light rain this morning and the plants are recovering already. I hope yours do too.

I have some courgettes in grow bags next to the house under the eaves. I think the direction of the wind and the overhang protected them and they escaped damage.
Also the Greenhouse cucumbers are coming on line
So all is not lost.

I also had some nice mini pepper plants in the green house about 8 of them.
They were coming on a treat, flowers and the start of mini chillies.
They were Adorno see

Unfortunatley they were a bit in the way so I put them out under the eaves of the house against the south facing wall, very hot spot.
This direction had no protectoin from the hail and I now have 10 chilli stalks !

Might abandon gardening and take up train spotting.

Don't do that, you'd have to buy an anorak. The stalks might recover and grow some leaves. We had heavy rain again yesterday, my outdoor tomatoes are looking decidedly bedraggled, I don't know how the flowers have stayed on!

Wow! We've had heavy rain but nothing like that.

The chilli's should regrow. If you over winter them you're meant to chop them right back and they resprout. Might delay the flowering though so you might need to put them inside to ripen.

We had heavy rain storm in Bristol Monday night my lawn (well whats going to be the lawn) looked like it was pond had to un block the drainage holes as it raised still im glad in away I now know I need to investigate better drainage also had to go and rescue the containers which where totally water logged due to the amount of rain we had.
I guess thats the joys of growing your own

But I wonder what the effect on commertial growers was. We have quite a large number of market gardens around here. Perhaps they missed it. Anyone know anything on this aspect?

Wouldn't tender stuff commercially grown be in polytunnels so have some protection? Pure guesswork.

Was having another look around and notice my my runner beans have lost there growing tips, again shot off. Only about 10% but still bad enough !

I am going to visit the nearby allotments at week end and see if they suffered as well or if it was just targeted divine retriubition for something ?

Perhaps it's for all the times I have given cats flying lessons ... with the end of my boot. They fly quite well but are not very good at landing !

Obviously no landing gear, but I bet they go a long way. Hope your runner beans were at the top of their canes when the ends were targeted, there'll be no harm done then, in fact you'll get more beans.

No they were about a third the way up.
I am surprised my comment about cats didn't get deleted by some nambie pambie. A previous post on cat paint bombs mysteriously dissappeared without any notification at all.
This is a gardening forum I suggest they join Cat Forum • Index page.
As most "none nambie pambie" gardeners know cats are the "Enemy" along side of Slugs Greenfly etc.
My veg plot is currently covered with ad hoc bits of chicken wire and plastic netting. Any bits I miss covering get filled with cat poo.
The lady next door has two young children. She said a few weeks ago they came in covered in cat poo from the garden. She had to throw away their clothes and shoes plus a garden slide and a couple of other toys.
I suppose this post will also disappear, perhaps I should start my own forum about vermin repelants?
