Im having a "stressful" time with my cucumbers, this is my first year growing veg and im like a stressed out first time parent worrying about every little thing.
Firstly the season began and i started off 4 cuc's F1 variety Tasty King which my packet insist's i should not remove the flowers. (my dad insisted i only needed 2 but suggested planting 4 as cuc's can be abit tempermental)Unfortunatly none of the first set made it past seedling stage as they all died on re-potting.
My second set (another 4) did better they survived the transplant into thier new home. Unfortunatly a rather unhelpful dog decided they didn't like thier new home and dug them all up.
3 plants survived the inital dog attack and i planted them back in the ground with little hope for thier survival, as they looked terrible having lost most of thier leaves and one had a broken stem.
Figuring it was only a matter of time before they keeled over and died i bought 2 plants in the garden centre to replace them planting these in a large growbag, there are a "mini" variety though their exact name is unknown and watching them grow they appear to be a all female variety. (something i didn't realise buying them)
Roll on a month.
The 3 origional plants are doing extremely well (tasty king) and are just starting to flower. (first flower appeared this morning)
The 2 mini cucumbers are also doing well and are producing decent sized fruit though i havn't tried harvesting any yet.
Questions.
1) how big do you let mini cucumbers get before harvesting??
2) i think i may have a problem, tasty king needs it's male flowers, but the mini is all female. Will the Male flowers on the tasty king cause the female flowers on the all female cuc to be fertilized?? will this make the cuc's go bitter?? If so any suggestions on stopping it??
3) with 5 plants anyone got any good cuc recipes
