baby cucs dying on plant

Hi all,

Why are my cucumbers dying on the plant when they are about an inch long? There are about 6 tiny dead ones, from a plant that prodcued the first proper cucs about 3-4 weeks ago. They just seem to be drying out, and are all wrinkly and brown.

Help please!!

I've got exactly the same problem. I had 2 great mini Q's but since then all the rest have got to an inch long, turned brown and shrivled up.

The plant hasn't dried out, is in a good sized pot and the rest of the plant looks really healthy. Mine is in the Greenhouse.

I've got outdoor Q's too which are fine.

Hope someone can come up with a solution soon!

I have to laugh as well, my cukes in the greenhouse are just about making it through [the largest is about 2 inches long], whereas one of the later cukes, which was a 'spare' was put outside and I've had a 3 incher off it and there is a 4 incher on there now.

Greenhouses eh???

I've got the same thing. Did it just get too hot? My greenhouse is only 4'x6' and I've left the door wide open constantly for ages now. The max temp in there was 48 degrees C a couple of weeks ago. I've had two really good cucumbers, but now got little brown things. I presume it's best to get rid of these in the hope it recovers? It looks really healthy otherwise.

I've had the same problem, my cucumber plant gave me 1 really good one which was around 8" long and had lots of little cucumbers on it and they suddenly all died either grew to around an inch and went yellow, or just went brown, I picked all of them off and 2 of the cucumbers which were around an inch and hadnt turned yellow i left on they have since been growing and looking healthy, so hopefully they will continue to do well

What sort of cumber are you all growing. As some of you have put cucumbers outside as well I could assume that it is something like marketmore. If so then your problem could well be lack of fertilisation as they are like courgettes and won't grow if they haven't been fertilised. Also remember that cucumbers don't like the same conditions as tomatoes, cucumbers like hot and very high humidity. Misting and damping down a couple of times a day may well help with fruit set.

So far (fingers crossed) mine look okay and they are outside. No consolation for those of you with dying cucs tho. All I can say is that I feed mine with tomato feed when I feed the toms.

my cucumbers have done the same, i posted pic on here not long ago to see if the knobbly bits were ok &they seem to have stayed that size & died.... wonder what ive done wrong...

had some great cumbers just been into the greenhouse and my inch long babies are turning brown they were ok this morning will they all do this? shall i pick them all off and hope somemore grow? please help new to veging and thought i was doing well!!!Also when do tomates start turning red got loads on the plant but they are all green?

My first year with a greenhouse and i'm having exactly the same problem. When we came back after a weeks holiday about 10 days ago there was one proper cuc about 8 inches long , on the bottom of the plant - it tasted yummy. But since then -nothing. A few tiny thin little things which have dropped off. There is one small thinish one right at the top ( the plant is now three quarters up to the roof )

The tomatoes have got lots of fruit on them - some are quite big and have been there for a few weeks , but no sign of them softening up or starting to ripen. Am i just being too impatient!! I do talk to them, honest !!

I had it last year I didnt water them enough cucumbers needs loads of water

I only have the problem of the small cucs dying off when I've let a more mature cuc. grow too large. The little ones start to grow soon after I take the large one off. (if they haven't already gone yellow)

I have this same problem every year...i grow 2 from new seeds and always buy in 2 plants, use big pots, feed and water as guided but always end up disapointed with the flimsy yellow/brown sticks.. i have tried male & female & f1 seeds all to the same result.. A few years ago i grew 'carmen' and had the best yeild you could imagine from 3 plants, 18 large cuc's in late autum and 2 a week through summer but at nearly £8 for 4/5 seeds they are expensive...The thrift in me tells me to try other varieties but next season i wont waste my time.....straight for 'carmen'...

I've got some new ones now which seem to be doing well again.
I'm wondering if "Silverfork" was on the right track and maybe it was the temperature in the greenhouse, it was during that hot spell that mine all shrivelled up.
Fingers crossed, these will be ok and if it gets really hot again i'll try and remember to pop them outside.
