  • Sugarsnax 54

    Hoora, my first posting!

I have two types of carrots growing in my container plot.
Both have the same growing medium ,( garden soil + mp compost + little coarse sand) and both in the same position. In one container I have the Adelaide early and one with Sugarsnax 54 bought from T&M as the sweetest carrot they have.

I lifted both and the Adelaide is fantastic, tender sweet and lovely.
The Sugarsnax on the other hand got very strong carrot flavour but also a bitter after taste.

Is anyone else here got this result, is Sugarsnax is just a hype? I see people on the forum recommended Chantenay as a nice old flavour, I like to eat carrots raw if possible and the sweetness is paramount.

    Hi Cimadirapa,
Welcome to the vine, if you want a sweet little carrot why not try "Parmex" its a small round carrot, i love the taste, you don't even have to cut them up...just pop em in your mouth ..you can plant them from early summer through to late autumn..give em a go.. i'm sure you'll love them

Like you I grew Sugarsnax and was very disappointed. It sounds silly but it was just too 'carroty', I've found that the best, truly sweet carrot is 'Chantenay', but even these have to be pulled small.

I grew Sugarsnax and Tendersnax this year (they were free).

don't like them ... I've gone out and bought more Adelaide seed, which is superb.

Think I will have to try Adelaide, I don't remember hearing of them before.

I've grown Sugarsnax in pots of MP compost for a couple of years, we all really like them They have to be pulled when they're still very slender though.
