Second Cropping - any ideas?

Hi All,

Here is a picture of my modest potato bed, created this year from a patch under an apple tree, where a rather vigorous shrub had been removed.

The pots were great, loads, so the soil improvement worked, but its now mid July - what goes in next? I have such a choice - help!

It's shaded - up to 50% of the day.
It's hot and still the rest of the time - south facing.

I have leeks ready to go in here - but is this the best choice? They can go elsewhere.
I could put in lettuce, or pak choi perhaps.
It would be nice to have veg growing there in late autumn/winter. Since I have cloches that fit this bed, but leeks don't need this - do they?

Can I ask for your suggestions please?

Congrats on your potato crop. I think leeks are a good idea - this has worked well for me in the past.

Why not put half the leeks in, space them out a bit, and put lettuce or pak choi inbetween, then when the lettuce and pak c are done, put the rest of the leeks in. Then, your leek harvest will be longer as well.

I'd perhaps put some peas in the middle as well, for a late fresh crop.

As it's a bit shady, I would go for lettuce - they don't appreciate being too hot. You could put the leeks in first, and lettuce between them. The leeks will still grow, and the lettuce will be harvested before they need the extra room.

Hey these are great ideas - I'm glad I asked.

Half now half later - that never occurred to me.

Zazen - it's not too late for peas then? What sort would you recommend?
