  • Not Potato Bags Again!!!!!!!

I've harvested some pots from the bag I grew them in. I earthed up like a good 'un, watered well, lavished care and attention on them..... but I've only got spuds (quite a few mind) from the very bottom of the bag. Now I know they should grow up the stem (hence the earthing up) but they don't seem to be aware of this. What went wrong?

Are they earlies? Second earlies? Maincrop?
I don't think you get the full effect of the 'growing up the stem' with earlies, they aren't really growing for long enough. The best variety I've used for that is Harlequin, which is a lovely salad spud, but is an Early Maincrop variety. I grew them in Spud Tubs (tall and thin) and had potatoes right up to the top of the containers. Might be worth a try for next year? They're ready to harvest in August from an April planting.

Second Earlies, so that means I've spent a large amount on compost which I didn't need to. Humphhhhh.

        Exactly the same here.

Earthed up and treated well throughout in pop up buckets - when furtled then finally harvested I got no spuds any more than half way up the stem.

Nice, spuds, but I had been expectant of more. Lovely taste mind - Nicola which are 2nd Earlies.
