  • Potatoes to sow now.

Can anyone tell me if I can still get away with planting some more potatoes, lates probably, main if pushing it?

Also what is the best way to plant potatoes in time for Christmas, and which variety is best to use?

    Cheers

    Mike

I don't think you would have much chance with lates. What you need is something like Carlingford, Vales Emerald or Maris Peer which have worked for me in containers for Christmas new potatoes. Others will probably have their own favourites.

earlies and lates refers to the length of time from planting to harvest - earlies take around 13 weeks

Don't forget to keep them frost free by putting them in a cold frame or greenhouse.

You've missed the boat for spuds now.

In buckets/ greenhouse border?...I'd go for Charlottes or Juliettes in for Xmas. Although Rustylady is normally right i'd allow a couple of weeks extra... as they don't grow quite so quick in the cold. Probably plant at the beginning of September. As Burnie says: You need to make sure the frost doesn't get them even in a greenhouse.
