  • Tasted my tomatoes this week what a shocker !

Wasnt sure where to post this one but felt I really had to postit anyway.

I'm growing legend beefsteak and one other variety in my placie greenhouse
( not sure re the other one as I naughtily lost the label/packet).

This week I have had a couple of beafsteak toms ripen ( just one at a time how selfish of them) , so I decided to cut them up and try them on their own for flavour.

I think it's quite well known if you but in the supermarket the big variety toms are less flavoursome than cherries and other smaller ones so I expected lots of size but not 'the greatest ' of flavour. However I cut up a legend and ate it and just could not believe how sweet and deep in flavour they were. I was telling my other half who does not eat anything at all with chunks of tomato in and hasnt eaten a tom in the 20 years I have known her and she said ,
" go on give me a tiny bit " .

Well I did and she gingerly chewed it then proclaimed " ohh that's delicious ".
After i picked myself up off the floor I questioned her and she said it was jsut a lovely flavour.

Now we all know home grown can taste a lot better than supermarket rubbish but this is agenuine story and I still think an amazing one.

I have loads of toms on the palnts now but most of them well green but I cant wait for the rest to start ripening up as I too thought that the toms so far have been delicious. I also wonder if other grapes have had such drastic results from folk tasting their wares .

    Cheers Mas

The only time I use to eat raw tomatoes was on holiday in Greece because I just didnt like the taste of our UK ones, 9 years ago when OH moved in she grew tomatoes and like your OH was amazed, tomatoes was always something that I wanted to like but could never stomach a supermarket one, I now always have to grow at least 2 Alicante toms because FIL reckons they are the best toms he has ever tasted, and slightly off subject but MIL makes egg sandwiches (from our chooks eggs) for her Wednesday night Bingo and her mates rave about them.

I love Marmandes for that very same reason, they taste like beefys in Europe, I can't wait until my lot are red.

You're lucky, the beef toms are often quite late! I grow Legend (as they're blight resistant) every year and think they're great! Can't wait for tomatoes on toast with a sprinkle of salt, pepper and balsamic.....bliss!

I like to just have a slice of fresh picked tomato sandwiched between 2 slices of mozzarella. Best snack ever.

I just used a freshly picked grushovka tomato on top of roasted veg, but had to keep a sliver back just for me.

No sign of the main crop tomatoes ripening yet. The cherry ones have produced about 10 red ones but none made it out of the greenhouse.

I cant believe it , my post has turned in to a right good recipe grabbign post

Im a cheese fan and especially good cheese like a top mozzerella
( when you can get one) so I'm going to start off with that idea and the balsamic sounds yummy too. I must find out what the other variety im growing is and get some opinions on that one as there are clearly some experienced tomato folk on here and this is only my 2nd ever attempt.

                      Cheers

Ooooo - snap - I picked just over a pound of San Marzano's last night as well in preparation for today's pasta sauce. Very nice looking group of fruits they were too!

However, having searched for the abovementioned Ketchup recipe, I may save the next lot...

I have just two tomatoes almost ripe and can't wait to taste them, having read your post, UKMastiff - I always love the taste of our homegrowns but you've really brought it home to me again.

Off to check the tomatoes again...

... just when I think I've got plenty of seeds ready for next year I read yet another thread and my mind is starting to wonder whether another variety or two of tomatoes is in order!!!
