Onion question

I planted some Red Karmen onion sets earlier in the season. They came on quite well but then most flopped over and the stems began going soggy. I've been looking at them and most are a shade bigger than a golf ball. My question is what do I do with them when I pull them? Cut the stems off or leave them? The stems look like they're starting to rot so I don't think leaving them in the ground will be of any benefit will it?

Some of the Bedfordshire Champions have flopped over too. Though they aren't starting to rot. Shall I leave them or pull them?

When they have flopped over, lift them and if possible dry them on racks (for the airflow) and then store

Lift them. Once the leaves have flopped they will do no more. Lift and dry them. Even if they're only small you will still be able to use them. My onions are all sizes, esp Red Karmen - some massive and some really small, all grown in the same bed.

Ahhhh.....thanks!!! I guess I just leave the ones still going strong until they too flop over?

My onions have flopped over and they're not awfully big either! I was hoping for some nice big onions and mine are certainly not!

What causes it?

Planted too close together? Not enough nutrients? Too dry at the wrong time, or too wet at the wrong time? Sometimes there's no sensible explantation at all and some just don't grow as much as others. I quite like to have a mixture of sizes in my onions - you don't always want a massive onion
