i've been growing something in a morrisons bucket.. not sure what it was, could have been cabbage, turnip or sprouts.. anyway, it'd been looking a bit ill, had windrock and the caterpillars had been at the leaves so i decided to put it out of it's misery today.. when i pulled it out the roots were covered in horrible little grub type maggots .. two questions, what the hell are they and how did they get into the bucket??

You never know with the cabbage root fly when or where it is going to strike next. I don't usually bother with collars and usually don't suffer to much. I loose the odd plant. I always make sure the plants are strong and healthy and of a reasonable size before I put them out on the lottie. I also understand that it is best to let the weeds grow around cabbages as it can confuse the fly. The only brassica I have affected is cabbages but supposedly it will attack any of them.
