Cabbages grrrr....

Have been growing savoy cabbages for the first time this year...have eaten one (very tasty!!). Went down the garden yesterday to see what was doing and the rest are like lace doilies now..... I had netted against the evil cabbage white and there are no caterpillers so guessing it must be slugs! Damn you slugs..damn you all to hell!!!!

Those little slugs crawl inside the growing plant and eat it from the inside out ...

It's snails that I'm battling with for my brassicas this year - the bed they're planted in is quite near an old wall... As the plants are under enviromesh, I gave in and put pellets under the mesh It's bad I know, but I wasn't going to get any cabbages this year, and the kale looked like skeleton plants...

It's amazing that we manage to grow anything with all the pests and diseases there are out there. But we seem to battle on and although we may fail in places generally we manage to get enough food on the plate. I tend to use slug pellets far to often and am determined to try one of the water in controls next year as I think they are more enviro friendly.

I tried growing small-headed cabbages in tubs this year because i'm fed up of the plagues of cabbage white butterflies we get. I stuck a pole in the middle and draped plastic netting around and it's been reasonably successful. This year we've actually eaten fresh cabbage and I've just pickled some and will be freezing some more in a few weeks. The only problem is that you need large tubs and can't get many in...even with the dwarfing varieties. OH says I'm wasting my time as she can get a bag of frozen cabbage for £1 but that's not the point, is it?
