Here are 2 picks...it's about 3 inches long and has 1 big yellow eye in the center of the top of its head (Don't know if the eye is real). It looks like an alien, pretty cool
The largest caterpillar in this country, will eat a cabbage in one sitting!! Seriously, I'm not sure what their main food is but I'm sure they eat a lot looking at the size of them. I never kill them as there aren't a lot of them about I just remove to an area away from everyone's allotment.
Found out that this thing is a 'Tomato Worm' on another forum...I'm in the US, not the UK...so I guess we dont have the Elephant Hawkmoths...The thing looks like an alien, don't think I'll be eating tomatoes from the garden this yr.
I found it on the stem of a boston ivy vine (which was very close to a tomato plant)...Other people seemed fairly certain it was a tomato worm, but I'm not sure. Figured that since it was near the tomato plant then it must be.
Another has said that it is definately a Achemon Sphinx "hornless hornworm"...after looking at the picture on this link, I would tend to agree...it has that single yellow eye on the top of its head
