  • Oca

Thanks to Frostyfreckle, I have 3 Oca plants growing this year. She sent 4 tubers, but one died, from overwatering in a pot I suspect.

I was searching for more info on growing them, my three remaining plants seem to be doing OK, but as always I wonder just how well they are doing compared to everyone else.
Anyway to stop rambling on, I found this site with an audio file to listen to, very interesting stuff, I advise anyone growing Oca to have a listen.

Please ignore everything I say, I make it up as I go along, not only do I generally not believe what I write, I never remember it either.

My top oca tip; when they have died back; and you think they are ready to harvest - leave them another month at least....they will double in size.

Have never heard of them before. How good a substitute for potatoes are they. I often find that substitutes may grow better but don't hold up when you actually come to eat them. If I remember I will have a go at them next year.

Womble I lost one of my plants as well. Can I ask has the new Womblet arrived safe and well? Gojiberry - Oca are nice roasted with garlic and rosemary (par-boil first), like a roast new potato(ish).

Excuse my ignorance - what is an oca? I've never heard of it.

              Congratulations Excellent news.

Anna - Oca is a tuber, part of the oxalis family - think "Lucky Clover" but on steroids. More info can be found on the Real Seeds website. I'll probably give out some Novemberish if you're interested.

I waited until December Frosty and the tubers were twice the size of the November ones.

I'll have more this year; not by design.....as always with tubers a couple stayed in the ground and have grown plants; they were in amongst some beans so I didn't want to pull them out. I'll harvest just before Christmas.

I wonder if I can get away with leaving until December - thinking about the earlier frosts up here. Might try and put the pots inside plastic greenhouse. Mmmm time to think.

Thankyou frosty and bramble, I need to sleep now Very, very tired.
While I was waiting last night I disemboweled at least 50 slugs and snails, amazing what you can do while you are waiting, bored, for the contractions to get closer. Did the veg patch a world of good.
