my pumkin plant seems to be taking over the veg plot.

should i be pinching it out? (like i do the tomatos?)
if so where?

the pumkins are getting quite big on the plant already.

Yes, if it's spreading too far you can pinch out or cut off the growing tips. Usually leave two leaves past a fruit that you want to keep.

I have to admit that I try not to if I can avoid it, but sometimes it's necessary. Don't forget to remove any immature pumpkins now so that the plant puts all its resources into swelling the ones you want to grow to maturity.
