  • Beetroot - Bigs and white at top?

    Hi there,

First year growing beetroot - i just dug it up today, and noticed that some of them (the larger ones) are a bit qhite at the top - and 'tougher skinned looking' - but appear to be normal under this. And also noticed some have been eatn partly by little bugs - looked like slaters??

is it still ok to boil and slice these as normal??

    many thanks - great forum!

    Neil

They should be fine. I got a few nibbles this year too leaf beetle I think, which I didn't get last year.

Hi Mailme, Slaters ( woodlice to our English friends) don't usually do that kind of damage. What happens is the slugs do the first nibble then the wodlice get into the holes. I think it is the slugs you have to deal with.
If the top part of the beets is not too nice then just slice it off after you have cooked it.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

Don't forget to try roasting - in tinfoil - much better flavour (in my view!)
just use rubber gloves to peel otherwise you look like you've slaughtered the dinner!
