This is my first attempt at growing butternut squash and I need advice. How many squash do I leave to mature on each plant, do I have to keep them up off the ground and how do you know when they're ready? At the moment one plant has two baby squash on it and lots more flowers starting to bud. Help would be appreciated.

I had some lovely butternuts last year. Two plants and they wandered all over the place through the other crops. Fraid I neglected them a bit and didn't do any pinching out of shoots. Pick them when the skin is hard and they sound a bit "hollow" when tapped.

I've got two growing on one plant, with more flowers coming, but I think this late on in the season, I may pinch the vine out and let it concentrate on the two its got.
I put an old slab or a bit of weed suppressing membrane under the fruit to keep them off the ground, this help prevent rot.
Mine are quite green and stripey at the moment, as Rustylady says, let the skin harden up before you pick them, and leave them outside for a couple of days (if its sunny and warm) to ripen the skin further. This will improve their keeping qualities no end.
