Some of my parsnip leaves were starting to yellow and I thought that this was just the foliage dying off. Now someone on the field has told me that it is more likely to be carrot root fly!

I am devestated as I was so proud that despite everyone telling me that they are hard to grow all my seeds took. I even put a barrier round the bed to stop the little so and so's. I have carrots in the same bed but they don't seem to be effected.

The guy who told me said that they should be ok as the parsnips will be of good size so the damage will be minimal but I am worried about the baby carrots that are growing.

    Am very depressed now

Well, the only way you are going to know if it's carrot fly is if you pull one up. If you've got a barrier round the bed I would have thought it unlikely.

It is disheartening when you've done your best to grow something, only to find it's been 'got at'.

We havn't had any blueberries, and only three cherries, thanks to the blackbird family. Don't you just love the little sods.

Cheer up, there's always next year.

Last year we grew parsnips and carrots next to each other, unprotected. The carrot fly ate the carrots and completely ignored the 'snips. Has anyone else actually had carrot fly each parsnips.?

As far as I'm aware the flies don't do anywhere near so much damage to parsnips as carrots are their veg of choice.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
