I am drawing the plans for next year's season and find I have the urge to try and grow some old cottage veg.

I am looking at growing:

Rampion
Spignel Meum
Skirret


Do any one here tried growing any? if so, any tips on flavour or condition?

Lots of damage to the usual root veg made me look for some alternatives that got good resistant to all the fauna reside in my grounds. Also I don't need huge crop just for me and the better halve.

I intend to order some from Thomas Etty.

Where else can you read vegetable lists from the Thirteenth Century or come across a variety of lettuce named Drunken Woman?
I see he warns that Skirret provokes both wind and lust so do let us know how you get on!

has anyone else tried spignel? i am going to grow skirret - hoping it will do as above with regards to the lust bit!!!

just had a look at the Thomas etty site and there is also a lettuce called fat lazy blond!! might get some as well as the drunken woman. they also sell mangold wurzel seeds - now thats a familiar name from years ago
