  • Plan B required.....

Went to dig up my Christmas tatties and to my dismay there wasn't enough of them and they wern't big enough!

Still, not to worry, time to adopt plan B

Dug up what I had, because I need the area for soft fruit bushes that I have sitting in pots ready to plant.

Re-used the plastic frame over six of my strawberry plants to give a few early berries I hope!

Potted the Jersey Royal 'shaws' up into plastic buckets filled with compost. Dug them out of the permafrost so that I didn't disturb them (marble sized tatties) and pruned off the frosted tops to a budded live bit of haulm. I'll keep them indoors and hopefully get a few 'New' tatties early spring.

A little bit dismayed, as I had built a polythene frame around them, covered them with straw and put in a small paraffin heater. I now realise I planted them in a frost pocket which didn't help, but I will know better for future.

Next year Christmas tatties go straight into compost filled pots and into heated greenhouse!

Carlingford seems to be the main bought one, but Charlotte and other early salad potaoes seem to be popular. I used Jersey Royals because some had sprouted!

Any of the 2nd earlies are OK Nicos. I had some Charlotte put put them in a bit lat & they are only just starting to sprout above the compost, still I'll have some for about Jan/feb instead. My neighbour up the lottie planted some in florist buckets & left them in there in the compost & has some beauties for Xmas, still look on th plus side .... I'll have more room for some extra roasties
