But another meaning of 'gypsy' is a stream that disappears in summer. A bit the way the potato foliage disappears when the haulms ripen?
    Hi Flummery
I don't dispute what you say , but up here its a beck on the south side of the Border and a burn on the north. Also with the weather we get there's very little chance of any of those disappearing

Well, I replanted my own Gypsies, but this year's crop is disappointing: well-watered, well-fed (comfrey tea), loads of foliage, but the spuds are all marbles

I saved some of those marbles and replanted them this year. I have some in a Morrison's bucket, and some on the plotty (well I hope so, I accidentally dug them up y'day thinking they were summin else ~ quickly shoved them back down before they noticed)

Our first one was harvested at the weekend; by the nieces to screams of 'purple potatoes - mummy look'. We haven't eaten any yet as we eat the ones that get battered by digging or are slightly slugged first. But some were fist sized so can't be bad.

Not realy gardening related but I was in Hawaii one christmas and left it late to buy some potatoes to take to a communal christmas feast - there were only purple ones left in the shop. I had never even seen purple potatoes before and wow what a great colour mash! I'd love to grow some here but thought they were maybe more "tropical". Shall look out for some seed ones fot next year. Thanks for sharing.

I just dug up most of this year's Mr Little (saved each year in my fridge). I've just read back that they were marbles when I planted them ~ how lovely then that they've all grown into proper big spuds this year.

Some of them have morphed into a Pink Fir type: they are still purple but gone all knobbly, just like PFAs. Most of them are just smooth and normal Mr Littles (on left of 2nd photo)

We grew Blue Danube this year (got them free when I bought my Sarpos) and they're a beautiful purple coloured skin too, but the flesh is a bit more waxy (which is what I like in a potato )
