I can only speak for myself but I sow mine now and the sets in March into raised beds (no waterlogging). Any sets that are going into normal beds may go in a little later depending upon the soil. You might be a bit later up there in the suburbs of Sunderland

So do you keep 'em frost-free then guys? Or will they be okay but just not grow?

How much light do they need? Could I start some off and keep them in the utility room/garage?

cannot get any seeds for love nor money around here and have placed a "Suggestion" in the B&Q suggestion box for the gardening dept and still no seed potato's I want to get mine before all the old boys get theirs and hoard them up.
Hoping to grow at least three varieties this year.
The Shallots went in on the shortest day as per tradition.

Loads of places online to buy seeds, but if its seed potatoes, can work out a bit expensive with delivery costs! Good selection though!

We are lucky here as we have a local shop ( for local people ) that do a really good selection of seed tatties. He closes for 2 weeks (this week & next) and when I asked him where he was going hes said nowhere he spends 2 weeks in the garages at home sorting out the potato, pea & bean delivery ready for when he re-opens !!

Tuckers in devon are resonable for both selection & price. You can order online or request a catalogue (always nice to read) Failing that try the local garden centres they should be gettin them in soon I knwo a good one near Peterborough www.tuckers-seeds.co.uk

Bought some Ailsa Craig and some exhibition Onions (The kelsae) too.
will be sowing this week in pots. Have planted some sets today as they have two choices once planted. It was so mild today many of us were digging in just our T shirts! and trousers of course.

I would like to try some onions from seed. I do not have a greenhouse but could make a 'pretend one' from some spare wood and plastic that I have. If I sow the seed now in my 'greenhouse' outside will they be ok with no heat at all?

Sorry LtP, In the North East you definately need some bottom heat at this time of year and I would suspect that would be the case for the rest of the country as well? You could of course use a windowsill to start them off?
