  • I have only had my lottie about 5 years now and had a go at growing a bit of
this and that. Its taken me this long to work out whats worth growing or not.
How much time I have available to cosset the fruit or veg. What is pretty
straighforward as I am not retired and only have so much time available each
week to look after my patch. I have 90ft gardens at the front and back of my
place that needs caring for. Thinking about it now, I am not sure how I manage
    it!!

Ah - not thinking about it is the key, I find, shushkin!

      • Won't be wasting anytime with beetroot. Why, year after year, do I produce red marbles. I must admit I try to grow them in containers but I do whisper sweet nothings to them each night, keep them lovingly well fed and watered so why don't they reward me?

[...]Let's hope for a wet winter (to fill the rain butts) or a wetter summer than this year.
It's surprising me that someone is wishing for a 'wet summer' after the last few we've had

I've decided that I'm not going to bother with broad beans next year, I've still got some in the freezer and I suspect they're going to have to get 'lost' in a stew to get eaten. Much prefer fresh shelly beans, they don't seem to go that nasty grey colour when cooked. The broad bean space will be happily filled with more peas

          • Purple Haze carrots - thought kids might eat novelty coloured carrots but from a whole pack of seeds I only got a few. The rest bolted and even those that did grow were only purple in streaks on the skin. Will try diff novelty next year.

            Asparagus peas. Were inedible.

Potatoes and toms in tunnel - murdered with blight. Broke my heart to rip out 55 tom plants since got the tunnel 2 grow toms for preserving. Willl have to regroup for next year.

To try them? We all know that veggies from the supermarket are a narrow range and taste completely different to home grown. How are you going to know if you don't try them?

It might be worth keeping the tomatoes in the middle of the tunnel and not having potatoes in there ar all? I was talking to another plot holder about this the other day - they had blight through their tunnel for the first time ever this year and they had planted early potatoes near the open door. She's decided not to grow spuds in there at all next year, just in case that was the factor. She was also considering putting a fleece on velcro round the door to put on when the weather is especially damp, (which was suggested by somebody else) to try and prevent the spores from getting in the tunnel.

                  • After two years of useless cauliflowers, i am gonna have. one last ditch attempt at my new lottie next year. After that they can go to hell because no matter how much steady water supply an perfect conditions i give them, they are no better than a tennis ball size sprig or four...grrr

When cooked it looses these and goes pink. Looks quite gory when it's pickled!

Don't worry, it's fine if you roast, the blurring only happens if you boil it.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Ah................. but the blurring becomes worse once you pickle it as mine has now become a cream colour!

PS Also disappointed with my purple jalapeno's which have turned green once pickled!

I'm exactly the same, my OH asked me to grow some as she likes them, then hardly any got eaten
I tried them again, as I will force myself to eat anything I grow, but I have to say, I can't quite see the point
