I think I'll do all french beans instead. I did some this year, and they aren't as productive as the runners.. which is fine by me!
You could always pickle or chutnify them. I'm growing runners, as well as Frenchies, next year for the first time - probably 'Scarlet Emperor'.

        • I may not grow 1st and 2nd early spuds either - I always forget which ones are which, and they take up lots of room. Just mains next year I think, or a good all rounder.

          • Won't grow Charlottes next year as I've not found them that good but will definitley substitute them for some other form of second early salad type and even more definitely grow first earlies as it's lovely to have them so erm err early!

            • Never again will I grow turnips - absolutely horrible - even though they grew quickly and to a decent size. I'm now giving a couple away to my next door neighbour every few days! I'm thinking of giving up on sweetcorn, too - never does much for me!

Did you peel them? I grew them this year, and made the mistake of not peeling one lot. They were horribly bitter, but if you do peel them before cooking, they're very tasty. They're pretty easy to peel - the outer skin just pulls away.

Glad you like it! Come to think of it, you could also freeze runner beans, which is simpler. I may need to get a bigger freezer if I'm going to take this grow-yer-own lark seriously.

                    • It has to be Swiss Chard for me. Grew it for the first time this year and had a bumper crop. Pity it tastes awful. Chap on next plot said I wouldn't be growing it next year and he was right. At least it's not a total waste, Iv'e put it all on the compost heap.

                      • I won't be bothering with radishes or pak choi (grew for 1st time this year and don't like it) next year or potatoes (other than 1st Earlies as they take up too much room). Carrots have failed for 2 years running (nasty bitter taste which I think must be something to do with carrot root fly despite not many holes/tunnels). But I will try again next year. Won't grow so many turnips or jerusalem artichokes either to make more room for cabbage and peas.

Takes up loads of room and tastes like cardboard!

Ooooo I love chard, use it any recipe instead of spinach as it's loads easier to grow.

                            • Unless I get the promised greenhouse by next season, tomatoes! I love them but the crop is too meagre outdoors. Having said that, our toddler has enjoyed identifying any ripe ones and eating them off the plant, so that makes it worthwhile I guess!

I might give Charlottes a miss as well, wasn't blown away by them this year and fancy trying some other varieties.

I love it - I bung it in curries. (That's if I've got any left after feeding the chickens a bit each day -they'll kill for it! It's their favourite greens.)
