Peanuts require a long, warm growing season (110 to 120 days) with plenty of light. They are semi-tropical, so a UK winter is unlikely to produce much for your effort, sadly.

On the tropical theme, I have just noticed that our shop bought Ginger has 1cm sprouts on it. Can this be cut & planted?

How about beech nuts? I used to love them, as a child! Since then have never found a tree with viable nuts in them - same with sweet chestnut.

We foraged loads of sweet chestnuts this year, a bit smaller than the ones you tend to buy but perfectly OK and very tasty. Still got a load left in the freezer. Sadly I don't think they'll grow well this far north so will continue to make the most of any trips down south (there has to be some reason to make the journey.............)

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I'm glad I found this thread.
Thank you Ollie for the peanut growing instructions.
I'm going to make it this years mad challenge to myself and see how well they do in the conservatory.

I know some friends have had some success with peanuts grown on the South side of Nottinghamshire. My FiL grew a walnut tree from a shoot and now has a little harvest each year. I think you have to be patient though!
