  • Ryecroft Purple Potatoes

As an extra experimental main crop, I bought half a dozen Ryecroft Purple seed potatoes. Dug them up today and had practically no potatoes. All the plants had been very healthy and they were treated the same as my other potatoes, all of which harvested well, in fact the Pink Fir Apples exceeded my expectations! However, I got about 4 average sized potatoes in total ie not even one per plant. Any body got any ideas why this would be or am I just very unlucky?

No idea - were there even any little babies attached to the stems?

Yeah, quite a few babies but only about the size of my thumb nail and therefore not worth it! Dug quite deep on the off chance that they were hiding.........

Been digging up the plot again today and found another 5 potatoes and they were all quite a reasonable size - have no idea how I could possibly have missed them yesterday but suppose it happens. Have doubled the haul but still disappointed by such a low return. On a plus point, have started digging up the Valors and they've gone mental so will have loads of spuds to store.

Darks spuds are very hard to find Alison! It still doesn't sound like a massive crop though.
