marrows - how many?

How many marrows should you normally expect from a plant? I only got 2. Was quite disappointed. No more flowers or any little ones forming.

Two seems very low, we've got loads on ours but as they're all over the place it's difficult to work out which ones are on which plant!

I planted loads of seeds 1 year and ended up with a good 60 odd marrows but the following year I planted a few seeds and ended up with about 4 :-(

My courgettes are the same. 3 plants and a total of 4 courgettes with no sign of any more. Thats an improvement on last year though; last year (my first veg year) I had 4 plants and they all got some fungal disease and died. Who said they were easy?!

I would say that 2 is rather low. I've had some courgette plants with absolute loads and others (a bit swamped and competing for light with hardly any!). In pot's faired far worse than in the beds and those in the bed's allowed to trail over the edge of the raised bed faired best of all. They seem to like a lot of water and food! In fairness the ones in the trough/Pot only got fed once and watered infrequently( the same as everything else)

Were they planted in open ground, or in a tub and if so what size tub. They do need plenty of water in order to form large plants - the larger the plant the more fruit you will get. Also depends on variety - those sold as compact will produce less fruit than the trailing/wandering ones.

They were in open ground with at least 3 feet around them before I planted anything else. The ground was rather dry sometimes (nannas borrowed garden) and they didn't get watered in that drought we had (remember that?!) as we were away! Think variety (from seed) was called green all round bush or something like that)

I will do better next year!

Numbers can depend on type, some only produce small marrows and need to be cut when they get to their optimum size. You need to remember that the marrow is the plants way of reproduction and if it thinks it has done enough then it stops making flowers and fruits. I have often had the same problem with butternut squash only producing one squash.

so far of of two courgette plants i have picked seven fruits. i have at least three more growing and lot of flowers. wouild have had even more but for knocking the potted courgette of the table and setting it back a couple of weeks.
