Spring brassicas

Ok - so have just got a lottie, which is really over grown and needs loads of weeding...My mum has bought me loads of brassica plants to put in the bit i have already cleared to give me something to focus on as well as the clearance of the weeds.

But will they be safe from cabbage white butterflies if I plant them out later in the month? I have never grown cabbages before so I have no idea what time of the year butterflies are a problem.

Cover them! Better safe than sorry and all that. Don't forget wood pigeons are quite partial to brassicas too.

The cabbage white caterpillars are currently munching their way through my horseradish leaves, on their way to becoming the next generation of egg-laying butterflies. If the warm weather continues we will have yet another hatching of eggs this year. So net everything.

Butterflies aren't a problem in the winter, but the pigeons are voracious eaters of brassicas

And white fly can be a nightmare in the winter if not netted.
