  • My leeks are amazingly free of rust

Normally my leeks look like rusty poles they have rust so bad, still edible when the outer leaves are removed but ugly looking.

Amazingly they are totally rust free this year so far, the variety is good old Musselburgh and Jolant.

How are you guys (and girls) faring?

    Hi PW

My first time growing leeks so I have no reference points. I am growing Musselborough - bought from ebay as I had a short row of spuds in the ground and only realised after lifting them that I had nothing to plant there.

They are growing nicely but not big enough to use yet, was hoping to pick some to make soup yesterday but only one was nearly worth pulling so didn't bother. Should I be feeding them anything to give them a boost or is it just a sit and wait thing?

Glad yours are better than usual too!
    Happy Gardening,
    Shirley

This was my first go at growing leeks and I am pleased to say that I have had no rust at all!
The only thing I'm a bit disappointed at is the size! - I had a few nice big ones but the rest are really quite smal in comparison - I harvested some and had them as baby leeks on Christmas day and the flavour was great though! I guess theres still a bit of growing time left....?

Pretty much rustless here too (touch wood) and I remember they looked very rusty last year. Grew from seed: Musselburgh and Yates Empire

          Mine are rust free!

I think its a fungal disease that appears in very wet summers, which the early drought put paid to this year.

Having said that, I have seen a bit of it about!

We've got 4 varieties of leek n the lotty at the moment and all but the Autumn Mammoth (I think) are rust free.

Mammoth Blanch & pot are as clean as whistles as are the Musselbugh so I think I'll stick to these next year
