  • What should i be sowing now?

    Hi all
After my 1st summer growing veg with a plot of my own there are quite a few gaps begining to appear where i have either harvested or the caterpillars have done their worst!!!
    My question is...
What should i be sowing now?
I will try and grow anything once so all suggestions welcomed.
    THANKS

You are a bit late to start anything from seed out doors, spring greens should be well on their way by now.Onion sets and Garlic are about the only thing you'll see in the garden centres that's edible just now.A late sowing of fast salad crops might work,lettuce/leaves or radish.
The soil will benefit from being prepared for next year, manuring and tidying up is on my list just now.Soon there will be moving stuff and pruning, new fruit tree to go in,more current bushes. One of the most exciting parts of gardening is planning for next year, crop plans(don't forget to "rotate" crops)ordering seeds, maintenance on your equipment. Most of these winter "tasks" are best done from a shed, usually with the rugby on the radio and a bonfire in the corner of the garden(remember to check for hedgehogs before you light it).Oh and a drink of your choice , mine is a bit of my bonus(no I'm not a banker),a 27 year old Islay malt from the now closed Port Ellen distilliary.

There've been several recent threads on the same subject. Have a search around.

Also, always keep an eye on the What I Did Today thread ... it is constantly updated with what people are sowing

If you have bare patches and nothing planned till spring then you could always try a couple of green manures to improve your soil. They tend to be hard work when it comes to digging them in but they are worth the effort.
