Cabbage advice

Anyone got ideas for cabbages that can be grown in pots or close together? Really like the taste of them and would like to put them in my beds later in the year. Any advice, never grown them and have limited space.

I understood that dwarf flowing cabages are what you want for basket and border displays........... and you can eat them when the flowers all dye off:-)

Miniature cabbages

I replied to this in your thread about your meal but there is a miniature cabbage called something like "Protovoy". Cannot remember seed supplier but seem to recall it is a savoy type. When mature, the plant will fit in the palm of your hand. I came across it when looking for miniature cauli's - may have been mentioned in Hessayon's book - hold on I'll go and look............... yep - I was right on all scores tough still don't know a supplier.

I think there a a few suppliers of mini veg these days Andrew. I know our local garden centre carries seed so It's either Suttons or Unwins.

Thompson and Morgan have mini vegetable seeds www.thompson-morgan.com But Minicole is a normal size cabbage that doesn't grow very big and is suitable for planting closer together. It tastes nice as well.

I will be growing Minicole this year and you say that Minicole cabbage doesn't grow too big and that they can be planted closer together than other varieties - what sort of spacing would you recommend from experience ?

Rat I just plant them all one foot apart. I grow three summer/autumn cabbage varieties and one variety of cauliflower which I plant out at the same time so I just plant them all one foot apart. But the seed catalogue states that minicole is suitable for planting close together. It is a nice cabbage. It has a small core and it stands in the ground perfect for a good three months.

Try 'Golden Acre' small quick growing summer primo type. Most cabbages grow to their alloted space so plant close together 6-8 inches. wider if you want a larger head.

I have just sown some seed from Kings but it is widely available.
